Just found this Website. Currently on Module 6 (fast Track) at Manchester, having mixed feelings about the course and was just wondering if anyone knows when the college start to look for a placement to gain some experience. I have had a positive experience throughout the actual training and doing well in exams however I feel I was initially mislead about the fees such as the extra's for books and exam costs. Because they neglected to inform me of this information I am now wary of their promise to endeavour to find me a placement. One other thing I should mention is that so far I have had 6 different tutors since I started, 3 of which have made it clear of their feelings about 'fast track' in that they do not agree with it which I think is the last thing that you need to hear when you have spent over £10,000 to simply try and get a job and better yourself. Finally, I have so far sat over 15 exams and feel it is wrong that you are not informed of which questions you have got wrong, to help you move forward and learn from your mistakes. After all we are going to be dealing with 'GAS' so surely you would think BTSC have a responsibility help you learn and to put you right when you are not quite grasping a subject. For instance you can pass an exam by scoring over 70%, but what about the 30% you have got wrong, I personally would like to know for future reference.

very interesting to read all this,I've been plumbing for over twenty years now, back when i started no one ever asked you for your papers, all that's changed now with the CSCS/JIB cards so about five years ago i went on a fast track plumbing course in Bristol(BTS),fine got the 6129 level 2 in about 4 weeks and it cost just under five grand which is about what they all charge.(for those of you that don't know the fees for training courses are 100% tax deductible)then i had a lot of trouble getting a JIB card as i did not have the NVQ level 2.so i thought i would get the NVQ to make things easy WRONG its not easy, first the center in Bristol i went to (BTS)was taken over by OLCI who would not now help me to get the NVQ.
OK i think i will try somewhere else BTSC they tell me that unless i do the 6129 with them they can`t help me with the NVQ.
so i phone up the CITB and ask them for help they tell me i can get accessed for the NVQ by any CITB registered centre,so i phone up OLCI again and tell them what the CITB have told me,OLCI now tell me the CITB don't know what there talking about and hang up on me.
OK i phone BTSC back and tell them what the CITB have told me,they tell me the CITB are wrong but if i retake the whole plumbing course with them they may be able to get me the NVQ,and they have a special price just for me the whole thing for sixteen thousand pounds,YES YOU HAVE READ RIGHT SIXTEEN THOUSAND POUNDS!.
so i gave up trying to get the NVQ and went for the 6129 level 3 and ACS Gas instead, which i wanted to do fast track so back on the phone to BTSC again, only now they want me to go and see them,so off i go to see them i got to see one of there sales team i think his name was Chris,i have never heard someone talk so much shit in all my life,i think he`s in the wrong job he should be out in Spain selling time share,he just kept trying to sell me more and more things i didn't want,he could not give me a start date either so i just made out i did not have the money right then(i did but i just want to leave by then)wrong move by me straight away he,s got a why for me to pay all i have to do is sign there and then,i would not sign anything as he could not tell me when the course started, i just got up and left then about an hour latter he`s on the phone he does know when it will start but i have to sign up there and then over the phone to get my place and there's only one place left and because he`s my friend he`s holding it for me.
This mans way of talking to you is very hard sell,i know
what i am talking about with plumbing any points i put to him he would not answer or he would just not let me speak or
answered a question with a question.
in my opinion keep well away from BTSC.

The good news is i have used Plumbing Academy in Edenbridge
for some things and there OK.I got to do the 6129 level 3 and Gas with PGL Training in Exeter and there OK,and quite cheap as well.

If you are going to do a plumbing course do your home work first, there are some good ones out there!

Hello again this is a follow up from my last comment back at 95 ive been doing the fast track course for a number off weeks now and im a little disappointed for the amount of bad comments since as the course is very good the only thing that’s lets this place down is the sales people as there are so many people on the course who think they have paid for everything and are fuming when they find out there are many extras like exams and registration I only recommend you do the fast track course if you are practically minded because there are lots of assessment during the week larger ones at the end and if you don’t do them within the time allowed you will have to pay to retake them now let me tell you I have passed everything with time to spare there are also around 2 to3 multiple choice computer based exams every week which I have passed with only a small amount of reading of the j.t.l nvq 2 pluming book and water regs book they will try to get you to buy lots of other books but trust me everything is in these 2 books and when you have classroom days make sure you pay attention coz they go over most of the information you need to know and what to reed up on now if anyone is going for an interview at btsc if they read both of my comments they will know all the right questions to ask. now I will update this site again with my progress
But let me say if you can get around the sales bullshit this is a very good course and the trainers are very helpful but you will have to get your finger out and work.
PS I started this course early than when I said back im my last comment due to leaving my last job sooner. Jim

Im at btsc manchester and am waiting to do my mod 13 and 14 mods , we were the first people in to do the modules in level 3 and had to wait for them to build the actual bays, even though i was assured by the salesman that all would be completed in time. I have been informed that we have run out of our allotted time and they want another £240 to carry on . I have written to the infamous mr brick wall and await a snotty letter back , i would not recommend people to join btsc for 2 reasons 1 the people who run the business are nameless and faceless and could not run a piss up in a brewery. 2 you have no come backs or back up.
What they have basically done is taken a really good idea and ballsed it up big time as i do agree the training is very good , but all the crap that goes with it is enough to say NO to btsc.

Hi all, and thanks Flynn for the helpful comments. Well, I decided not to take up the course for BTSC. There are mainly 2 reasons why.

The first reason came when i researched btsc for a few hours and found out they had the worst reputation and most unhappy customers. (to put it nicely)
Also, I talked to an old family friend of my mum, his name is Howard. As a retired plumber he told me to avoid companies such as this at all costs. You can't learn the trade in 12 weeks. His advice was to get your books and study in your own time. Once you have grasped a few basics apply for a collage course (2year) then gain an apprenticeship with a qualified plumber. One way to go about this is to make yourself a business card and post it in as many plumbers merchants as you can. Howard said a lot of plumbers find apprentices in such a way. You will want to do this when your doing the collage course, they will probably help you.

The Second reason for not wasting my entire bank balance was simple. The trade has become saturated with fast track students. Companies just aren't taking on thsese students because they realise noone can plumb efficiently in 12 weeks. They are more willing to give someone a place who has done at least 2 years training beforehand.

Howards now a retired multi-millionaire who still does the odd job for family and friends. If only I had done this sooner he could have taken me on as an apprentice :P

A few notes here, I think there important enough to mention.

The building trade is still out on its ass.

The plumbers trade has become saturated. (There aren't as many jobs or opportunities as i thought) There used to be, quite a few years ago. But the current climate of this country has changed things a lot.

(I'm assuming people on here live in the UK so..

http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/sitecontent/documents/workingintheuk/shortageoccupationlist.pdf
( Official link on job shortages in the UK )

Even our Armed Forces are filling up because people are that desperate looking for work now.. The RAF is full but not sure about the Navy or Army. They will always want infantry i guess.

Closing notes-

Anyway, I would advise anyone to stay away from companies like BTSC. It's your money, don't give it away. Take the time to learn the trade and sign up for a collage course. Buy yourself a few books and study in your own time. When you take on course don't forget to put yourself forward and make some business cards. Your collage can also help with getting you an apprenticeship.

I think I have dodged the bullet too.

Ive had the inteview and being ex-sales smelt a fish straightaway.

I waiting to read through the TCs at my leisure, certaintly wont be pressured into signing up to anything.

Shame because id really like to be a plumber.

Possibly a shattered dream, more likely saved lots of £

I did my research and it took me months to trawl through all the bulls**t from various companies.

Interview "my arse".... Distance learning you are having a laugh..

I am not going to name the company I trained with but it cost me half the price of BTSC no pushy sales, just upfront talking and they listened to what I WANTED.

I am about to take my gas quals in January and my work placement (they provided is great).

DO YOUR RESEARCH THOROUGHLY.... leave your details with all of them. Make your own mind up....if you manage to get a call from a company based in Cleckheaton you've hit the right one.
They have been trading well longer than the cowboys...and they get all the experienced gas fitters who have been qualified for years coming back to renew their gas ticket.
They train new entrants and also do commercial gas.
Good luck everyone.

I've just had my interview at BTSC Chessington. I started out quite excited, as I am a very practical hands-on engineer with considerable plumbing experience - I was confident I could easily pass any selection criteria they had. How naive was I !!!

Well that initial excitement soon wore off. (1) the sales director (they always seem to be Sales Directors, don't they ?) rambled on for an unbelievably long time (>2 hours) and it was actually difficult to get a word in edge-ways. (2) the aptitude test was ridiculously easy.

What really got me thinking were the crude/blunt sales tactics that wouldn't have seemed out of place coming from a dodgy double-glazing salesman back in the eighties. Firstly they hold back the all-important fees info until the last few seconds of the 'interview', likely to be a bit of a shock to most people methinks.

Secondly, having passed the selection process a bizzare time pressure kicked in from nowhere - along the lines of 'we can offer you a place but will only be able to keep the place open until the end of the week' kind of thing. Complete Boll%#ks.

That really pissed me off. Had I not just just sat through one of the longest 'interviews' of my life where they rambled on for hours about (amongst other things) new modules starting every few weeks for the forseeable future ? And yet all of a sudden now I had to start almost immediately. I'd never even heard of the place a few days ago, now I had to find a massive wadge of cash and sign a contract. F&*k the hell right off!!!

Even if they are legitimate, and I have to be fair here, I think they are. They do physically exist, they have been around a while, they do have training centres and staff, they are C&G certified etc etc. But those sales tactics ? What is that all about. Absolutely no way man.

I can see why they need to talk to me before offering me anything - they claim 100% placement and need to protect that claim. But having met me what the hell difference does it make to anybody if I sign that day, next week, next month or next year ? The whole pressure-selling thing stinks and right or wrong should make anyone suspicious.

And another thing. To buy time I said I had to talk to a family member about borrowing the money. In the meantime I was to call BTSC anytime with queries/questions etc. I did just that on several occasions over the following week and the guy always answered the phone first ring and seemed to have all the time in the world for me. Could be a coincidence, but something tells me that the Sales Director (for it was he) would be one hell of a lot more difficult to get hold of once I'd parted with my cash. Don't forget this is the same guy that told me they were practically fighting applicants off, the demand was so great. Hmmmm.

To summarise, buyer beware. There are some real scams out there (distance learn plumbing by DVD anyone? - give me strength!). In this context BTSC seem to me to be one of the good guys, in that it appears that they will deliver exactly what they promise. But I just get that uneasy feeling about the whole set up, so I'm out. I wouldn't go back there if they paid me.

Twelve months and 10 grand is a massive investment by any standards. Spend a few days doing your research.

I’ve just had my interview at BTSC Chessington. I started out quite excited, as I am a very practical hands-on engineer with considerable plumbing experience – I was confident I could easily pass any selection criteria they had. How naive was I !!!

Well that initial excitement soon wore off. (1) the sales director (they always seem to be Sales Directors, don’t they ?) rambled on for an unbelievably long time (>2 hours) and it was actually difficult to get a word in edge-ways. (2) the aptitude test was ridiculously easy.
